Don’t Take the Bait: Avoid Spear Fishing Emails

We hate reading about people who have fallen victim to identity theft and cyber-attacks of any type.  The following article, Don’t Take the Bait, Step 1: Avoid Spear Phishing Emails, is part of a campaign by the Internal Revenue Service and provides some good advice for all businesses to consider. These are common tactics used by cybercriminals, share it with your employees and peers to help everyone stay aware.

Spear phishing emails are often tailored to businesses and their owners, resulting in stolen data and business information.  In our industry, criminals will often try to steal taxpayer data to allow them to file fraudulent tax returns in the names of individual and business clients.  While we have taken deliberate steps to ensure our client’s data is safe, we have seen an increase overall in individuals who have had their identity stolen and have had a tax return filed in their name.  It is a long process to get back to square one and get back on track with the IRS.  It is important to understand the basic idea behind spear phishing emails.  Read this article and feel free to give us a call if you have any questions.
